Improving communications for remote rice farmers Many of our rice farms in Argentina are too remote to have access to a telephone signal, so to improve communication for farmers in the field, our rice-milling facility and farming land in Molinos Libres, has introduced a satellite system. Nine farming sites throughout the province had either a low-quality phone signal or none at all, meaning employees couldn’t communicate between sites effectively and weren’t able to call for help in an emergency. We set up a satellite communication systemwhich includes internet connection, satellite landline and internal phone lines for sites to communicate with each other. The project has been very successful, both for the business and the local community. Improved communication systems enable shared decision- making between sites and improve relationships between colleagues and people in the community. Better connections have also made our sites safer as we’ve been able to implement more efficient work processes and importantly, enabled colleagues to call for help in an emergency. Engaging with communities We aim to deal openly, transparently and inclusively with our communities. We build andmaintain constructive, long-standing relationships with our stakeholders. Dealing openly and transparently with all our stakeholders is vital for our future andmaintaining our social licence to operate. We support many local initiatives and projects that contribute positively to the wellbeing of the local communities surrounding our operations and offices. These range fromprojects with global outcomes to smaller projects that benefit local communities. 17 Glencore Agriculture Sustainability Report 2018
