Sustainability Report 2018
Minimise impact on water We aim to minimise the impact of our activities on water availability and quality, and to protect waterways and reservoirs. Agriculture is a major consumer of water and a growing global population is putting pressure on this scarce resource. The impact on communities, agriculture, biodiversity and health could be significant, particularly in areas where water is already in short supply. Where possible we are minimising the impact of water use in our operations, looking at our fresh water use and howwe get rid of waste water. We pay special attention to sites in areas where water is already under pressure. We support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean water and sanitation . SiMFaz – FarmMonitoring System As part of our commitment to ensure that all the commodities in our supply chainmeet the highest standards of sustainability, our operations in Brazil have implemented a monitoring system that provides relevant data about suppliers and turns it into simple, accessible information to everyone involved in products marketed by Glencore Agriculture. The system covers the following commodities: soybean and its derivatives, oil and soybeanmeal; maize; sorghum; rice; wheat; cotton; and sugar in its screening report. By using the systempurchasers, marketers and external evaluators can see whether a supplier is compliant with five socio-environmental criteria: • embargoes of the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources • the Amazon Protection System • modern slavery laws • the Amazon Soy Moratorium • Pará state’s Green Grain Protocol The billing system of the SiMFaz database blocks the contract automatically when any uncompliant criteria is detected. If a non-conformity is detected, a deep supplier analysis is carried out throughmaps andmany other available sources, taking in other criteria such as indigenous lands, illegal or even legal deforested lands and legal, credit or environmental data. Through this systemwe can identify suppliers that don’t meet required standards and give guidance on how they canmake their products more sustainable. 13 Glencore Agriculture Sustainability Report 2018
