Sustainability Report 2018
Contribute to sustainable supply chains As a leading exporter and marketer of agricultural commodities we operate along the supply chain and canmake sure all our activities, frompurchase to delivery, meet high environmental standards. We incorporate sustainable best practice wherever possible along the supply chain to protect our communities and vulnerable areas from environmental harm. We support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production . Soy We are amember of the Round Table of Responsible Soy (RTRS) and a long-term participant in the Amazon Soy Moratorium. We do not source soybeans from land inside the Brazilian Amazon and we work with the industry, producers, governments and organisations to eliminate deforestation. Deforestation has reduced significantly since the start of the Moratorium, and we are working towards full elimination. Sustainability efforts rewarded In 2018, Glencore Agriculture’s Viterra business won a Blue Circle sustainability Award for operating in an environmentally and socially responsible way at our port terminals in Canada. A Blue Circle Award recognises a business going above and beyond regulatory requirements to conserve energy and reduce air emissions. Viterra took part in a programme organised by the Port of Vancouver to conserve energy and reduce air emissions at Cascadia and Pacific port terminals. The environmental leadership demonstrated by industry partners such as Viterra will help the port authority attain its vision of being the world’s most sustainable port. Viterra has been recognised for the highest level of voluntary participation in two programmes; the port authority’s EcoAction programme and the joint programme with BC Hydro, the Energy Action initiative. The EcoAction programme provides incentives through discounted harbour rates to implement noise reduction initiatives in their operations, and the Energy Action initiative works with terminal operators to enhance energy conservation practices and reduce energy waste. Cotton We are a member of the Better Cotton Initiative which aims to make global cotton production better for the people who grow it, for the land it grows on and for the sector’s future. It trains producers in sustainable practices to reduce the amount of fertiliser, pesticides and water they use. Our goal is to increase the share of sustainably produced cotton in our supply chains. Biofuels We are among the leading suppliers of sustainable biofuels. We produce biodiesel from rapeseed in Europe and from soybean oil and bioethanol (from sugar cane) in South America which all have International Sustainability and Carbon Certification. We also monitor our infrastructure and supply chains closely to ensure they incorporate the latest sustainable best practice. 11 Glencore Agriculture Sustainability Report 2018
